The IBM pSeries 690 Model 681 is a 64-bit, SMP UNIX server. The Model 681 features silicon on insulator copper chip technology, LPAR and self managing capabilities. The Model 681 is designed for consolidating workloads into a single UNIX system.

- 16 hot-swappable disk bays (up to 128 with optional I/O drawer)
- 5 media bays
- 20 hot-plug PCI-X slots (up to 160 with optional I/O drawer)
- Up to 1TB of ECC Chipkill system memory
- Up to eight 7040-61D I/O drawers per server; each I/O drawer supports 20 blind-swap PCI or PCI-X bus slots and up to 16 Ultra3 SCSI disks that can be hot-plugged
