How Important is Green Storage? A Look at the Green Data Storage Technology Survey
European professionals have at last taken Green data storage options seriously and a
substantial number of them, albeit a minority, are actually investing in green data
storage options. Some are willing to go the distance of even paying a bit more for a more
energy efficient hardware. SearchStorage.co.UK carried out a technological survey of more
than 136 storage professionals and came out with an interesting finding.
Only a minority of people in a survey feel that their company would not invest in green
data storage services in the near future. Half of the people in the survey had set the ball
rolling and were planning to have green data storage services in a couple of years. While
57% of the respondents didn’t have any green initiatives at the moment, of them, more
than 68% said that their organization will spend on green technology in the next five
years. Testimony to the importance of energy efficient hardware is that two-thirds of
the respondents said that they were ready to pay more for an eco-friendly product.
A number of technologies had been recognized as effective ways to adapt energy
efficient such as the use of cloud storage, improved capacity systems, better
performance-oriented technology.
However, it is not possible to quantify the impact of a green, eco-friendly product. Most
companies quote energy consumption numbers to get their point across, but even that
is not a very efficient or reliable method.
Most of the respondents of the Greentec Systems survey feel that the use of green
energy can be a part of every office with improved chances of financial benefits and cost
cutting. Conventional IT equipment is destructive for the environment and hence
regulator and authorities should offer more sops and benefits for green IT technology
development.
