Happy Birthday IBM PureSystems! Turning One and Tackling Big Data
April 2013
IBM first launched its PureSystems approach in an attempt to integrate hardware and software into application platform patterns in April of 20102.
With PureSystems, integrated solutions set for specific applications and workloads are realized in packaged offerings from IBM. This approach is finding market traction, according to IBM. At the end of 2012, IBM had sold over 2,300 PureSystems across more than 70 countries.
“Over the past year, the IBM PureSystems family of expert integrated systems has continued to expand to meet the evolving needs of clients and partners around the world,” Jason McGee, IBM Fellow and IBM CTO for IBM PureApplication System.”
McGee noted that the PureSystems family of server systems has been particularly well suited to help those organizations that are trying to transform their businesses and take advantage of opportunities being afforded by cloud, mobile and Big Data, but are challenged by a lack of IT skills and resources.
In October 2012, IBM advanced its PureSystems portfolio with new PureData servers. McGee said that the PureData Systems help clients more efficiently manage and quickly analyze petabytes of data in minutes and intelligently use those insights to support specific business goals across their organizations.
“Most recently, new PureSystems models were launched to help remove the complexity of developing cloud-based services by making it easier to provision, deploy and manage a secure cloud environment,” McGee said.
“Those models include a smaller PureApplication System to accelerate cloud deployments for a broader range of organizations and a PureApplication System on POWER7+ to ease management of transaction and analytics applications in the cloud,” McGee continued.

IBM is now rolling out a new series of PureSystems with the PureData for Hadoop solution.
“PureData for Hadoop is an expert integrated system which offers a turnkey solution to help accelerate and simplify Hadoop for the enterprise,” Nancy Kopp, IBM Director of Big Data, PureData.” More than just a reference architecture, it is fully integrated to manage and integrates easily within the IBM Big Data Platform.”
Among the integrated capabilities that the PureData for Hadoop solution offers is integrated archival software and more advanced HA capabilities. Kopp noted that one of the key use cases for Hadoop in the enterprise is for Archival.
“PureData for Hadoop features built-in archival tooling that easily moves cold data from the PureData System for Analytics to the PureData System for Hadoop,” Kopp said. “PureData for Hadoop is also architected for high availability and features best in class security for Hadoop with advancements in both BigInsights and integration with Guardium software.”
