IBM Helps Sao Paulo Create an Intelligent Transportation System
The regulatory agency of transportation in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo Agência de Transporte do
Estado de São Paulo (ARTESP) has joined hands with IBM to create an information center in the city
to enhance quality of transportation services provided by the local operators. The center with the
help of advanced analytics will unify data collected from across 271 cities to enhance security and
quality in the public transport sector.
IBM servers will be at play here. The state-of-the-art system will be built on IBM Intelligent
transportation technology and will transform the conventional data collection procedure of the
regulatory body. What was once done through manual inspection over 4000 miles of road network
will now be done through Operational Control Centers which will cover over 30 state highways. This
will not only improve precision but will also lead to significant cost cuts in the state budget.
According to ARTESP general director, Karla Bertocco Trindade, the transportation sector of Sao
Paulo will be greatly benefited through the use of IBM technology as they can now view the data
real time and will effectively increase efficiency and security in the state highways in the region.
Prior to this, the contractors used to submit inconsistent data regarding road conditions and
incidents and there was no safety net to verify their information. Now using revolutionary Big data
analytics the Information Control Center can process data it receives from weather stations, sensors
call boxes and other devices integrated into the network. This gives them precise data regarding rate
of traffic flow, incidents and revenue collection throughout the highway network. The Information
Control Center is the first step in creating an intelligent transport system for Sao Paulo.
