Green Servers
As far as green server solutions are concerned, it’s time to say a huge Yahoo!
Yahoo has built a Green Data Center spanning 155,000 square feet in Lockport, NY. The building is designed to utilize the outside air for cooling purposes, eliminating the use of items like mechanical chillers in the facility.
The building known as the Yahoo Commuting Coop, because of its untraditional shape resembling a Hen’s Coop, can accommodate up to 50,000 servers. It uses 40% less energy and consumes 95% less water as compared to traditional cooling systems.
What is the Secret behind the Innovation?
With a blend of amazing engineering and pure genius, Yahoo has managed to maximize the flow of outside air. The outside air gets channeled inside the building, then the servers intake the air and utilize it for cooling requirements. Heated exhaust air gets collected near the top and exits out of the facility.
Location Advantage
Even the site for the building was carefully chosen. Because it lies near the Niagara Falls, there are favorable weather conditions for most of the year. But when the weather gets too hot, they use an innovative evaporative system to cool the servers instead.
Technological Aspects
Besides that, Yahoo has come up with the green wall which spans 62 feet and is segmented into 7 sections. This feature not only promotes their Go Green initiative but also provides an aesthetic, “back to nature” atmosphere for work.
Yahoo gets Deserved Recognition for its Revolutionary Concept
This building is such a novel idea that Yahoo got a patent for this “Integrated Building Based Air Handler Server Farm Cooling System.”
The statistics show that these green servers save 36 million gallons of water per year!
This facility comes in the backdrop of Yahoo’s commitment to being an Environmentally Conscious Company. Yahoo has joined the ranks of Microsoft, Alibaba, Google and other tech giants in coming up with novel techniques for the advancement of Green Servers and technology.
