Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) 3.0 is Revolutionizing Digital Transformations
Enterprises need to deal with huge amounts of structured and unstructured digital data these days. The right use of data can put a business on its way to success and help it gain important insights, making it necessary for all businesses upgrade their infrastructure.
In a survey conducted by Dell Technologies, 78% of international businesses felt that the rise of digital startups can impact their market position. Another 45% expressed their concern of going obsolete in face of the competition posed by the new age digital startups.
The need is being felt by all businesses to transform digitally or speed up the process. But they are being held back by the liability of their legacy infrastructure that fails to support the intensive workloads and modern applications. The legacy technology also prohibits them from running cloud native applications and dealing the huge amount of unstructured data arising from various verticals like IoT.
Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) 3.0: The Answer to Seamless Digital Transformation
Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) brings a solution to all the problems faced by enterprises on their digital transformation journey. It will enable enterprises to achieve wide scale digital transformation rapidly with faster marketing times utilizing the cloud platform. The software-defined infrastructure is also meant to run the modern day applications and next generation workloads with unparalleled flexibility, scalability, and resilience.
The ECS is based on the Dell EMC PowerEdge Servers and reduces the TCO by 48% compared to public cloud options like Google and Amazon. The innovative object-storage platform is also available as software only and can be deployed on industry-standard hardware easily.
The Dell EMC ECS brings a host of improvements and benefits from the organization. But before getting to them, let’s go through the specifications of the ECS Appliance quickly.
A Quick Look at the Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) Appliance
The ECS Appliance is offered in two versions- the U Series and the D Series.
The U Series comes with flexible configurations and has the ability to scale infinitely. The appliance utilizes the Intel x86 servers and the U Series accommodates 60 disk drives in each node while the D Series can accommodate 98 disk drives.
The basic U400 model comes with 320 TB while the U4000 is equipped with 3,840 TB. Each disk has a capacity of 8 TB with 7,200 RPM. The nodes are decoupled for server and disk enclosure which improves the performance of the infrastructure. The U Series is available in configurations of 4 to 8 nodes. 10 GbE network connectivity links components within the rack while it is capable of going up to 80 GB/sec using the 10 GbE uplinks to external servers.
The D Series starts with 4,480 TB storage capacity while the D7800 packs 7,840 TB. Each 7,200 RPM disk drives come in 8 TB or 10 TB depending on the configuration. The high density disk rack can hold a maximum of 784 x 8 TB disk drives and comes in combination of 8 nodes each for disk enclosure and servers. The server enclosure is a 2U 4 node one and ships in the standard 40U deep cabinet.
The D Series has a maximum bandwidth of 80 GB/sec based on 8 x 10 GbE uplinks for external networks. Within the rack the work is done by 10 GbE HA network connectivity.
The ECS Appliance has been fully configured and tested by EMC and can even be used as a turnkey storage appliance. Enterprises can also adopt the service through public cloud solutions like Virtustream or as ECS-as-a-service from Dell EMC.
Advantages of Dell EMC ECS for Enterprises
Go Digital on your Terms
Enterprises are not forced to use the ECS Appliance in their bid to go digital. They can also use their compatible hardware which meets industry standard and use ECS as software. It is also available through public cloud solutions which are cost effective.
You can deploy as per your requirement and start the digital transformation with little investment but effective results.
Increased Security and Control
Enterprises sometimes find public clouds unsuitable as they don’t offer complete control of the data. They may also face difficulty transferring the data to or from the public cloud and other incidents like system outages. Public clouds can also open up possibility of compliance issues or security threats which can harm the enterprise.
EMC ECS brings an end to such problems. It combines the agility and user friendliness of the public cloud with the protection and control of private cloud. The improved enterprise capabilities also deliver enhanced monitoring, compliance features, and alerting processes.
Hyper Scale Cloud Capabilities
The EMC ECS enables enterprises to develop a hyper scale cloud architecture which offers all the cloud storage benefits. Organizations can now create next generation applications with the combination of object, block and HDFS capabilities in a single system.
Organizations can also enhance their hybrid and private cloud infrastructure and use self-service features to achieve ease of use. Customers will also be able to use data services like real-time data ingestion and data analytics over a secure platform.
With completely automated provisioning, analytic readiness and accessibility, it can be the perfect tool to handle huge amounts of Big Data generating from all verticals.
Scale Effortlessly
The ECS systems can be scaled infinitely in case of both small and large files, delivering robust consistency globally. The ECS Appliance has been designed as a modular scale-out solution which offers one of the highest densities per rack unit.
Depending upon the configuration, the ECS systems can accommodate anything up to 2.9 Petabytes to 6.2 2.9 Petabytes in a single rack. The system delivers an impressive 63% improvement in storage compared to other ECS offerings. It can be taken to the Exabyte scale just by clustering.
Dell EMC ECS is enterprise ready and can be seamlessly deployed to begin or improve your digital transformation. You can download the software version of the ECS for free and try out to see how it feels!
